Also included is an English exhibitor magazine page with an article about the movie (see our image). (Learn More) Jew Suss (released in the U.S. as "Power"), the 1934 Lothar Mendes English anti-Semitism historical melodrama (set in 1730 in the Jewish ghetto of Wurtenburg, Germany; about a brilliant Jewish man who rises from the ghetto to become the right hand man of the Prince, but they have a falling out, and he is persecuted for being Jewish, and at the end, he discovers he is not actually Jewish, but he states that he is Jewish anyway, which leads to his doom) starring Conrad Veidt (in the title role as Joseph 'Jew Suss' Oppenheimer), Benita Hume, Frank Vosper, Cedric Hardwicke, and Gerald du Maurier (a very distinguished British stage actor who appeared in a handful of silent movies from 1917 to 1920, and in a handful of sound movies in the early to mid 1930s; he is the father of author Daphne du Maurier). Note that the movie had a very limited release in the U.S. in 1934 as "Power", because it was perceived as anti-Semitic, even though it was actually very much the opposite (there is an amazing bit of dialog where a friend of Veidt's tells him that there is no more anti-Semitism, saying "But it's 1730! anti-Jewish sentiment is a thing of the past!", and Veidt replies "No, my friend, they will be against us in 1830, and in 1930, too")! Also note that this movie was remade by the Nazis in 1940 as "Jud Suss", and the story was twisted so as to make it one of the most vile anti-Semitic films ever made. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this English pressbook, which is a "country of origin" item for this English movie! Not only that, but movie paper from the first release of this movie in any country is extremely rare! We have had some stills and jumbo lobby cards from the U.S. release (as "Power"), and two Swedish posters (as "Makt"), and two Belgian posters, but nothing from the initial English release, except for stills. So until we were consigned this pressbook, we did not even know what the first release English posters look like. But now, of course, because of this pressbook, we can see images of first release English posters, which are advertised as "STRIKING POSTERS FOR A MASSIVE PICTURE"! Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this English pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Finally, note that this English pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle. The pages are partially separated at the spine and there are tears in that area and slight staining where the staples were. Learn More about condition grades
