Date Sold 8/4/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 13 Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe Italian 9 1/2" x 11 3/4" [24 x 30 cm] Movie Stills (Learn More) L'inferno (released in English-speaking countries as "Dante's Inferno"), the 1911 Francesco Bertolini, Adolfo Padovan & Giuseppe de Liguoro silent Italian religious horror fantasy melodrama (a feature length adaptation of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, but trying to recreate it using the classic illustrations of that work by Gustave Dore, literally showing the nine circles of Hell!) starring Salvatore Papa (as Dante Alighieri), Arturo Pirovano, Giuseppe de Liguoro, Pier Delle Vigne, and Augusto Milla (as Lucifer). Note that this was the first feature length movie to be shown in its entirety in the U.S. There were U.S. movies made in 1909 that were feature length, but those were shown in several parts over several weeks or months, because it was believed that an audience could not sit still for the entire length of a single feature! THIS movie disproved that theory when it was a giant hit, and it is often described as the first blockbuster movie ever (and as the first feature length horror movie ever), and critics of its time and since have described it as the best film adaptation of Alighieri's work ever (and it was the very first film adaptation of it)! The movie shows people in literal Hell, including full frontal male nudity, which would not be seen again in a mainstream release until Women in Love in 1969! In 2004, a newly restored version of the movie that combined the British and American prints from the BFI and the Library of Congress was released on DVD with a score by Tangerine Dream. In 2011, Italy released a more complete version with different music, and in 2023, yet another release was announced, which promised a new 4K restoration and three new scores! Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received these Italian stills, which are "country of origin" stills for this Italian movie! Not only that, but they feature wonderful images of various areas of Hell, as depicted in the movie (see our images). Also note that these deluxe Italian stills measure 9 1/2" x 11 3/4" [24 x 30 cm], and are printed on double weight paper stock. They have no printing on them, because the movie was released worldwide, and they would be sent to many countries, which would then overprint information in their own language. Condition: good to very good. All of the stills have some pinholes, smudges, and stains around the edges. Please look closely at our super-sized images to see the exact condition of these incredibly rare stills! Learn More about condition grades
