Date Sold 8/27/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Autographed 4 1/2" x 6" [11 x 15 cm] Paper (Learn More) John Greenleaf Whittier was a Quaker poet and anti-slavery abolition advocate from the 1820s to the 1890s. He is considered one of the Fireside Poets, and author of Snow-Bound. One of his best remembered quotes is "Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, 'It might have been'." Whittier passed away in 1892 at the age of 84. Important Added Info: This paper has been personally autographed (signed) by John Greenleaf Whittier! It could be matted with a vintage or repro still and framed together to make a cool display! Note that this is one of a wonderful collection of 36 items that were assembled by a collector decades ago, mostly from RR Auctions, which has auctioned signed items since 1976. The person who purchased these items passed away several years ago, and while he did not save most of the certificates of authenticity he received when he bought these signed items, almost all were purchased between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, and we think it is extremely likely that the autograph on this item is genuine. In our last auction, we auctioned around 90 items from this same consignor. Now we are auctioning the last of this wonderful collection, and after this, there will be no more left to auction! As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: good. The signature has an address and date below it, and there are stains scattered throughout the paper, more so in the left one-third. Obviously, this can be restored, but bear that in mind before bidding. Learn More about condition grades
