Auction History Result Lot #: JW 015 JOHN WAYNE stock 1sh '40s John Wayne by Komak, Shadow of the Eagle Date Sold 7/10/2004Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. Appears in John Wayne Movie Posters at Auction CATALOG SOLD OUT The image at right appears in the auction catalog we published as shown above and was sold long ago and we do NOT have it available for purchase. An Original 1940s (probably 1949) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Stock One-Sheet Movie Poster (27" x 41") (Learn More) a 1940s (probably 1949) John Wayne stock poster used by theaters to advertise re-released John Wayne serials from American Films. Theaters would order this poster, which has a large blank area where the title of the specific film being shown could be added (either through a snipe or through overprinting), thus getting many posters for the price of one (but the only examples of this poster we have seen have been overprinted, with just two titles, Shadow of the Eagle and Hurricane Express, both serials, so we suspect that this poster was solely used for re-releases of these John Wayne serials). Note that, in the U.S., after John Wayne achieved major stardom in 1939 with Stagecoach, distributors rushed to re-release his many 1930s B-westerns to theaters. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and the restorer did a good job, but you can see signs of the restoration from inches away (since most people look at posters framed on a wall from at least a few feet away, we don't feel this is a defect, but we feel it should be noted). See below for this poster's pre-restoration condition (we are the only major auction company we know of that shares this information with our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). good. There was paper loss across the top foldline. There was small paper loss down the vertical foldline. The poster has some scuffing across John Wayne's credit at top. There were some tears, creases, and small areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. The poster was well linenbacked and looks nice, but the restorer did not touch the scuffing around Wayne's credit. Learn More about condition grades
