Date Sold 8/29/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) The Thief of Bagdad, the classic 1924 Raoul Walsh silent Arabian Nights romantic action adventure fantasy thriller ("'He will steal your heart away!'"; from the story by Achmed Abdullah; about a thief in ancient Arabia, who poses as a Prince to win the hand of a Princess, but when he does, he confesses to her, and he is flogged and thrown out; he enters a contest to win her hand, but he must go on an extremely dangerous journey to win it!) starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr. (in the title role as The Thief of Bagdad), Snitz Edwards, Charles Belcher, Julanne Johnston (as The Princess), Sojin, Anna May Wong, and Noble Johnson (as The Indian Prince). Note that there is a 1940 movie of the same name which borrows elements of the plot of this movie, but is really not a remake (although both movies are really wonderful and are both "classics"!). Finally, note that Mitchell Leisen (well regarded director of 1930s and 1940s romantic comedies) did the wonderful costumes for this movie! He had started as a costume designer in 1921, and in 1922, he did the costumes for Fairbanks' Robin Hood, and after doing the costumes for this movie, he also became an art director, which led to his first directing assignment in 1933! Artist: Anton Grot Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this window card (with incredible art of Fairbanks on the flying horse over the city by Anton Grot), and that was 30 years ago, when it sold for $4,025! That window card has now been reconsigned to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a heavy paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the window card had many creases, smudges, scuffs, and faint stains scattered throughout. Overall, the window card was in good condition prior to paperbacking. A very talented restorer was able to remove some of the above chemically, and then afterwards did really expert restoration. From a normal viewing distance, the poster displays really well, and you have to get really close to see signs of the restoration. Obviously, one would prefer to find a better condition example of this window card, but it is beyond rare, and is almost never offered for sale or at auction (and proof of that is that we auctioned one 30 years ago, and the only way we got another one was because the person who bought it 30 years ago has now reconsigned it!).
