An Undated (probably 1950s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel Movie Poster (measures 47 1/2" x 63"; known as a 'grande' poster in France) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious, the classic 1946 Alfred Hitchcock World War II (WWII) Nazis-in-South-America romantic love triangle crime film noir ("Fateful fascination! Bold intrigue!"; "Notorious woman of affairs... Adventurous man of the world!"; "Unceasing excitement... Relentless suspense!"; "Adventurous Man! Notorious Woman! - the boldest deception two lovers ever dared!"; "Deep their love! Great the risk!"; "Written by Ben Hecht"; one of Hitchcock's absolute best movies; the plot is wildly implausible, but the quality of the acting of the entire cast and the great direction are so good that you don't care!) starring Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Louis Calhern, Leopoldine Konstantin (billed as "Madame Leopoldine Konstantin", in a wonderful sinister performance as Claude Rains' mother!), E.A. Krumschmidt, Lenore Ulric, and Reinhold Schunzel NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Roger Soubie Important Added Info: Note that this French one-panel measures 47 1/2" x 63". Condition: good to very good. The poster had some creases and tiny tears along some foldlines, and tiny paper loss at some crossfolds. There was darkening and tiny tears around the edges of the poster, and some tiny paper loss in the top of the right blank border. It appears that at some point after the poster was linenbacked, it was very roughly handled (perhaps by a low ranking employee at a live auction house!) and perhaps it was dropped, or fell from where it was hanging on the wall. Whatever occurred, the poster received some damage, which includes two 5" long partial tears (to the right of each of Bergman's eyes), plus some creases and scuffing in the area at the bottom of Berman's face, extending just into the black area beneath her neck, plus some added creases in the center of Bergman's hair and a small area of paper loss in the blue background above Bergman's hair. It also caused the poster to begin to "lift" from the linen in several places. This is really a shame, since it appears the poster had very little wrong with it prior to being linenbacked. But fortunately, I believe this is largely reversible. If I owned this poster, I would immediately have it re-backed by a very talented professional. After proper re-backing, the poster's defects will be reversed, and it will look fantastic, and there really should be little paint restoration anywhere in the image!
