HYDE 8x10 LC 1920 John Barrymore says Hyde has done him a great service! Date Sold 11/2/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Lobby Card (Learn More) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the classic 1920 John S. Roberson silent horror thriller ("By Robert Louis Stevenson") starring John Barrymore ("The Screen's Greatest Actor in a Tremendous Story of Man at His Best and Worst"; in the title roles), Martha Mansfield, Brandon Hurst, Charles Lane, and Cecil Clovelly. Note that there were several obscure silent movies based on this classic story starting in 1908. In 1920, Barrymore starred in this version, and there was a different English language version made that same year, and also a German language version, and all three movies had different casts and producers! Also note that Barrymore performed the initial transformation scene into Mr. Hyde without special effects! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that, in the early days of movie making, when lobby cards were first made (around 1915), studios would issue sets of the cards in two sizes; the regular 11" x 14" size, and a smaller 8" x 10" size. The cards were identical in every way except for the different size. This practice continued through the early 1920s, at which point the studios abandoned the smaller lobby cards, likely because theaters either ordered 11" x 14" lobby cards or 8" x 10" stills, and did not order enough of the 8" x 10" lobby cards to justify them continuing to make them. Condition: good. There is paper loss in the corners and small paper loss in the middle of the right border, with a 1 1/2" tear extending diagonally upward from the small paper loss. There is uneven darkening in the right of the card, extending into much of the bottom blank border, where there is some staining (see our image). It appears that someone glued the tear in the right border, but otherwise made no attempt at restoration. In spite of its defects, this card can be displayed and enjoyed just as it is, and certainly, a talented restorer could make it look wonderful (and it is quite possible that the stains could be partially or completely removed through chemical means). But please bear in mind the condition of this card before placing a bid! Learn More about condition grades
