A Linenbacked Special Poster (measures 20" x 30" [51 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) 1939 New York World's Fair, the 1939 to 1940 international exposition held from April to October 1939 and 1940. The theme of the fair was split into different zones: Transportation, Communications and Business, Food, and the Government Zone. There was also the Billy Rose Aquacade, a musical and water show that starred Johnny Weissmuller and Eleanor Holm. Of special note in the World's Fair was the "Trylon and Perisphere", which were two giant structures side by side, connected by an escalator. The Perisphere contained a diorama showing "The World of Tomorrow". These two structures became the symbol of the World's Fair, and the image of the two structures (in blue and orange) were put on licensed products advertising the World's Fair (it was one of the most licensed events ever, with over 25,000 different products created, from teaspoons to tables, and everything imaginable!). Artist: Albert Staehle Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 1939 World's Fair poster! Also note that this poster may have been trimmed and it measures 20" x 30" [51 x 76 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It measures 20" x 30", which would seem to be the size it was made, but we found an example of this poster on the Internet that appeared to have slightly larger borders, so it is possible that this one had the blank borders slightly trimmed (perhaps to fit a frame), or perhaps it was made in two slightly different sizes. It also had a few creases and scuffs scattered in the image, more so across the middle, as though it were once partially folded. It had some pinholes and smudges around the edges, with a tear in the top border, in the background above the "S F" of "WORLD'S FAIR". Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
