A Linenbacked French Travel Poster (measures 24 3/4" x 39 1/4" [63 x 100 cm]) (Learn More)

Royan, the 1930s French train railway railroad travel poster (with a tagline that translates to "Royan of the greenery, of the sun, all the sports") encouraging people to use the Chemins de fer de L'Etat railway to visit the French coastal town of Royan, and featuring Lucien Peri artwork of many people enjoying the beach and ocean. Note that Chemins de fer de l'Etat (literally translates to "State Railways") was an early state-owned French railway company. It was established by state order of the Third Republic in 1878 to take over ten small failing railway companies operating in the area between the rivers Loire and Garonne. In 1938, all French railway companies merged to form SNCF (Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais - the French National Railway).
Artist: Lucien Peri
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French travel poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. Soon after it was created, it was mounted onto a thin linen with no excess and two circular metal hangers were taped to the back of the top left and top right. Either before or after the poster was backed, it acquired many light creases around the edges and a few scattered in the poster. The poster could be displayed as it is, or certainly it could be removed from the old linen and properly backed.
