Date Sold 4/22/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 7 1/4" x 10" [18 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Little Caesar, the classic 1930 Mervyn LeRoy gangster mob organized crime thriller ("The power-mad monarch of the murder mobs!"; based on the novel by W.R. Burnett, and loosely based on the rise and fall of Al Capone; at the end of the movie, Edward G. Robinson says that classic line "Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?") starring Edward G. Robinson (in the title role as Caesar Enrico 'Rico' Bandello), Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Glenda Farrell, William Collier Jr., Sidney Blackmer, Ralph Ince, Stanley Fields, and George E. Stone. Note that this was one of the very first of the great "gangster" movies of the 1930s, and it predated Public Enemy and Scarface! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that, oddly, this vintage 1930 still from Little Caesar has a snipe glued to the back, which gives a biography of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. that was written in 1936, when he made "The Amateur Gentleman". We imagine that someone reused this still in 1936, but we feel certain that the still itself is from 1930. Note that this still was consigned to us by legendary collector/dealer Marty Davis! Marty was hired in 1972 to evaluate the entire collection of W. Ward Marsh (1893-1971), who was the film critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper from 1919, until his retirement in 1970. In 1919 Marsh wrote his first of 23,000 movie reviews for the Plain Dealer. Marsh died less than a year after his retirement in 1970. His library, and photographic and memorabilia archives were given to the proprietor of Cleveland's finest bookstore. Marty Davis was the first person with a background in film history and collectibles to examine the archives. He worked for three to four hours a day, for six months, and his compensation was his pick of the archives. This still is from the W. Ward Marsh archives, and it was stamped on the back by Marty Davis to indicate that it came from this legendary collection. Also note that this still has been trimmed and it now measures 7 1/4" x 10" [18 x 25 cm]. Condition: fair. The still was trimmed on the left, and it has significantly discolored, especially in Fairbanks' head and Farrell's hair and forehead, and it is very noticeable and distracting (see our image). Please do not bid on this still unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them restored. Learn More about condition grades
