eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 5m0022 LOT OF 10 TO THE SHORES OF TRIPOLI 9X11 STANDEES 1942 director's personal items! Date Sold 8/23/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 10 9" x 11 1/4" standees from To The Shores of Tripoli. Note that we can't say exactly what these standees are, as we have never seen ones just like this before! Someone took 10 stills from the movie and very neatly rounded the edges with scissors, and then glued them onto red and blue boards and attached a standee backing to each (see our images). It seems like the kind of thing that might have been done for a reception in advance of a premiere, but that is solely a guess. The only thing we know is that they were the property of director Humberstone! Of course, To The Shores of Tripoli is the 1942 H. Bruce Humberstone patriotic World War II (WWII) United States Marine Corps (USMC) military propaganda romantic action thriller ("Produced by Darryl F. Zanuck"; "Original story by Steve Fisher"; the oft-used plot of a spoiled rich young man who joins the military, and slowly learns the meaning of patriotism and helping others) starring John Payne, Maureen O'Hara, Randolph Scott, Nancy Kelly, William Tracy, Max 'Slapsie Maxie' Rosenbloom, Harry Morgan (in his first movie!), Edmund Macdonald, Russell Hicks, and Minor Watson. Measurements: 9" x 11 1/4"Note that this lot and 21 others we are currently auctioning, were owned by director H. Bruce Humberstone (nicknamed "Lucky"). He was born in 1901 and he started as a juvenile actor, and in his teens, he became a script clerk, and then worked his way up to being an assistant director to many top directors, including King Vidor. In 1932, he directed his first movie, and he worked steadily through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, directing one last movie in 1961. He directed both "A" and "B" movies, including some Tarzan, Charlie Chan, Cisco Kid, and more, and some of his movies have cult status, including "I Wake Up Screaming"! The 22 lots we are currently auctioning include a large number of stills (many of them key books and some include lots of incredible candids showing Humberstone) from movies that he either directed or was the assistant director on, and there are also some non-still items as well, including his personal phone/address book, which had the phone numbers of all the top stars of that time! This is a rare opportunity to obtain large numbers of guaranteed original stills and other items from Humberstone movies that were the property of the man himself! Condition: very good. These standees were homemade, but surely by someone in the studio, and they are in generally nice condition (see our images of the front and back of each).
