An Original Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Joseph Mankiewicz's Cleopatra, the 1963 (while it was in limited released in the U.S. in 1963, it did not go into general release in the U.S. until 1964, so the posters all have 1964 dating on them) Joseph L. Mankiewicz English/Swiss/U.S. Egypt historical romantic pseudo-biography epic ("The No1 of all time"; "See Cleopatra triumphant entry into Rome!"; "See the thrilling battle of Actium!"; "See the brutal assassination of Caesar!"; "See the love affairs that destroyed an empire!"; "See the victorious Roman army occupy Cleopatra's Empire"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the novel by Carlo Mario Franzero) starring Elizabeth Taylor (in the title role as Cleopatra), Richard Burton ("as Mark Antony"), Rex Harrison (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; "as Julius Caesar"), Pamela Brown, George Cole, Hume Cronyn, Cesare Danova, Kenneth Haigh (as Brutus), Roddy McDowall (as Octavian), Loris Loddi, and Francesca Annis. Note that this epic production created epic problems for 20th Century-Fox! Huge salaries and many production delays caused the budget for the movie to soar to then record heights, and it almost bankrupted the studio! Initially, Peter Finch was cast as Julius Caesar and Stephen Boyd as "Mark Antony", and this trade ad, which was released at the very start of production, has them billed under Elizabeth Taylor. But during filming in England, she became ill, and production had to be halted, since she was in virtually every scene of the movie. Director Rouben Mamoulian quit to work on another project, and so did Peter Finch and Stephen Boyd, who had to quit due to prior commitments for other movies, and they were of course replaced by Rex Harrison and Richard Burton. Note that not only does our current auction of 999 stills represent the absolute finest selection we have ever had in terms of quality of image and film, but it also represents the finest CONDITION group of stills we have ever had! Half of the stills are graded as being in "very good to fine" condition (which is our highest grade for vintage stills), but we were very strict on this, because otherwise, perhaps two thirds or three quarters of the stills would have received this grade! We downgraded stills to "very good" for pretty minor defects, and many of these might have received our "very good to fine" grade in the past. And the half of the stills that ARE in very good to fine condition would likely be graded "mint" by any other auction! This is the finest group of stills I have ever seen, and I can only hope to equal it someday! Condition: very good to fine. The still is in very nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
