An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 1/2" x 39 3/4" [70 x 101 cm]) (Learn More) Heroes for Sale, the 1933 William A. Wellman drug addiction World War I (WWI) veterans-returning-from-war-to-find-no-jobs melodrama (which deals with the drug addiction problem among World War I veterans, a daring subject for 1933) starring Richard Barthelmess, Aline MacMahon, Loretta Young (20 years old!), Gordon Westcott, Robert Barrat, and Ward Bond (this was his 35th movie since 1929, and he was uncredited or played bit parts in all of them!; he would end up making a staggering 272 movies, and apparently, Warner Bros. directors liked to give him a part in virtually every movie they made, often uncredited or bit parts, even after he was a well established actor!; he had been best friends with John Wayne for years, as supposedly they were college roommates, and appeared in almost all of Wayne's later movies, especially those directed by John Ford; he achieved stardom at the end of his career as the star of TV's "Wagon Train", and died in the third year of that show's production in 1960) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster originated from the legendary "Carson Collection" assembled by Richard Allen between the late 1930s and the late 1980s. Mr. Allen was one of the very first movie poster collectors, starting in the mid 1930s, and in the 1970s and 1980s he worked to get an incredible collection of posters with wonderful art. He would seek out the finest examples of each poster and then have them paperbacked by museum restorers, using the finest conservation techniques. Portions of his collection were illustrated in the great coffee table book, "Reel Art". Bruce Hershenson auctioned much of his collection in the early 1990s in his auctions through Christie's in New York City. Almost all of those posters have not returned to the auction block! This is a rare example of one of those posters returning (our consignor purchased it from us in 1992, 23 years ago). Incidentally, Richard Allen is still alive and well, as is his wife, Barbara Carson Allen, for whom The Carson Collection was named! Also note that this one-sheet measures 27 1/2" x 39 3/4" [70 x 101 cm]. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had tiny paper loss at the bottom two crossfolds and minor wear on the folds. It had enlarged pinholes around the edges, with a total of six enlarged pinholes near the center, in the white background area. It had an enlarged pinhole to the left of Young's face, in the shadow 1" from her mouth. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was paperbacked by the finest museum restorers (see above). After it was backed, it acquired a tiny tear in the center of the bottom blank border and one in the upper left blank border. It will display wonderfully on any collector's wall, but it needs to be handled carefully. Learn More about condition grades
