Date Sold 9/26/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Chapter #1 (The Terror of Tarzan) Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Tarzan the Mighty, the 1928 Jack Nelson & Ray Taylor silent jungle action adventure serial ("An original serial produced by Universal Pictures Corp. by special arrangement with Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of 'Tarzan of the Apes' and 'The Cave Girl'") starring Frank Merrill (in the title role as Tarzan), Natalie Kingston, Al Ferguson, Bobby Nelson, Lorimer Johnston (as Lord Greystoke), and Charles Gemora (as both Taug the Gorilla and Toka the Gorilla!). Note that this is a "lost" film. Also note that this serial was originally intended to star Joe Bonomo, famous strongman, but he was injured working on a different movie, and he was replaced by Frank Merrill, who had a fantastic physique, but in this movie, he wore a very modest outfit that covered most of his torso! Also note that this movie was supposedly based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "Jungle Tales of Tarzan", but it took great liberties with the plot. Tarzan finds a pair of brother and sister castaways on a jungle island, and he rescues them and brings them back to civilization. Finally, note that starting in 1929 and continuing into the 1940s, Charles Gemora played gorillas in many movies, likely because he owned a gorilla suit, and could do a somewhat convincing job portraying a gorilla. Just a few years later, Ray 'Crash' Corrigan would also start playing gorillas, and no doubt they competed for roles in every movie requiring a gorilla! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Not only is this card incredibly rare (see below), but you almost never see a major movie where they include semi-nude non-African native women, even in "jungle" movies like this one! Certainly, this card pushes the limits of what was allowed to be shown on movie paper advertising in 1928! Note that ANY movie paper items from this serial are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned two one-sheets (25 years ago and 8 years ago), six lobby cards, two heralds, a glass slide, and a Swedish poster from this movie (and NO other movie paper of any kind) until we received this lobby card, which is the only chapter 1 lobby card we have ever auctioned! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: very good. There are some smudges and faint stains around the edges, and a small tear in the top blank border, with "A-2" written in pencil in the right of the top blank border. The image area is in nice condition. Note that this card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back! Learn More about condition grades
