An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Recruitment Poster (measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) U.S. Marines: Soldiers of the Sea, the circa 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster. There were multiple recruitment posters of this design and each featured different full color artwork. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! Artist: Bruce Moore Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had many creases, tears, and some stains around the edges, with paper loss in the top blank corners and a few small areas of paper loss in the rest of the blank borders. It had a 5" tear at top center that extended into the "A" of "MARINES" and it had a 6" horizontal crease at the bottom of the central image area. It had a 7" tear in the right border that extended through one of the inset images. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Obviously, this poster has many border defects, but the image area still displays surprisingly well (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
