An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Robin Hood of Monterey, the 1947 Christy Cabanne south-of-the-border cowboy western ("Based upon the character created by O. Henry") starring Gilbert Roland (as "The Cisco Kid"), Chris-Pin Martin (as Pancho), Evelyn Brent, Jack La Rue and Pedro de Cordoba. Note that O. Henry wrote the short story that contained this character in 1907, but in that story, he was a pretty despicable person, who killed for sport! In 1914, a silent short was made based on the short story, but then nothing more until "In Old Arizona" was made in 1929, with Warner Baxter playing the character now known as the "Robin Hood of the Old West" (because he had changed from a bad guy to a good guy!), and Warner Baxter won the Best Actor Academy Award, one of the only times that a character from a western won the Best Actor Oscar. Oddly, Fox did not recognize the potential great value of a series based on this character (or perhaps Warner Baxter did not want to immediately repeat the role and become typecast), but in 1931, he reprised the character in this sequel named after his character. The character was again dropped until 1939, when an aging Warner Baxter returned to the role with "The Return of the Cisco Kid", with Cesar Romero as one of his sidekicks, and Chris-Pin Martin as his other sidekick. Apparently, Warner Baxter was done with it at this point, but Cesar Romero switched from sidekick to lead in "The Cisco Kid and the Lady", with Chris-Pin Martin as his only sidekick. There were then five more movies in 1940 and 1941 with the same actors. In 1945, the series was resumed yet again with Duncan Renaldo playing the lead. He made three movies that year and then Gilbert Roland took over in 1946 for six movies that year and the following year, and then Duncan Renaldo returned yet again (with Leo Carrillo as his sidekick, Pancho) for five movies in 1948 to 1950! Meanwhile, there had been a radio show starting in 1942, and in 1950, Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carrillo made the classic TV series that ran for 156 episodes through 1956, and amazingly, they filmed all the episodes in color, even though 99% of TV sets at that time were black & white! There was an attempt to revive the character in 1994, with Jimmy Smits in the lead role, but it appears the character's time had passed. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Condition: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds, pinholes in the corners, and some creases and smudges around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not at all distracting (and any restorer could easily touch them up without re-backing the poster).
