An Original Vintage Folded English Three-Sheet (called a 6sh in England) Stage Play Poster (3sh; measures 40" x 89 1/4" [102 x 227 cm]) (Learn More) Robinson Crusoe, the circa 1930s English stage play production. There are two three-sheet posters (plus a double crown) for this (we assume they are all from the same production, although they have very different artwork; one features cool artwork of a very sexy female with a hunting rifle, and the other shows a female with a colorful bird, and both posters also feature stereotypical artwork of the island native Friday. Note that our consignor wants to make it very clear that he in no way condones artwork of this sort, and recognizes that it was done back at the time when this poster was produced, but certainly, we all hope we will never see this type of stereotype artwork again)! A collector from England tells us he believes that this poster (and the other English stage play posters from other classic fairy tales) were used for local Christmas pantomimes (that were very professional productions) that were held all over England for many years. Most of the posters were produced by Taylors of Wombwell from 1929 to the late 1930s (but it seems likely that the posters we are auctioning date from the late 1930s). It was quite common in those pantomimes for women to play boys' roles, and for men to play the roles of unlikeable women (like witches and mean old ladies!). If anyone knows more about this play or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was almost certainly printed in 1939 or very soon after, at a time when England was undergoing a severe paper shortage (as was most of Europe) due to World War II. So they would take older unused posters, and print new posters on the backs of them! In this particular case, the sections were printed on the back of a piece of other English posters We have provided images of the back of both sections, although of course, the winner of this auction will receive the single "Robinson Crusoe" poster (in two sections, which have printing on the back, as shown; the smaller piece has a small portion of an unknown 1930s English 6-sheet or 12-sheet on the back, and the larger piece has a portion of a 1939 "Newsboys' Home" English 12-sheet; it is because they used part of a 1939 poster that we think the poster is almost certainly from 1939 or very soon after). English 12-sheets are the same as U.S. six-sheets, so both these pieces are likely one of four pieces that comprised the full poster, so of course it is a million to one shot (or worse) that you could ever locate the other three pieces of either poster! Condition: very good. The poster was printed on the back of old posters (see above) and there is slight bleed-through from the back in the light colored areas (see our image). Otherwise, the poster is in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
