A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 45 1/2" x 60 1/2" [116 x 154 cm]) (Learn More) Le Matin (literally translate to "The Morning") was a French daily newspaper first published in 1884 and discontinued in 1944. The journal was particularly notable during the Dreyfus affair, as early as 1896 questioning the withheld evidence against the officer accused of treason. Le Matin was one of the four biggest daily French newspapers in the period before World War I, employing 150 journalists along with 500 technicians and other workers. The newspaper's political leanings moved progressively towards nationalism and, after World War I, were openly anti-parliamentary and anti-Communist. It approved of collaborationist policies in June 1940 and adopted a pro-Nazi line before disappearing in August of 1944 Artist: Louis Gallicelo Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French advertising poster! Also note that this poster is promoting the story Vengee! (Avenged!) by Henri Germain, which was published in the newspaper. The top of the poster has the tagline "She is ours the damsel!". The poster is undated, and we are guessing it is from the 1920s. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tears and paper loss along parts of several folds and some in the borders.
