An Original Vintage Comic Book (measures 7 1/2" x 10 1/4" [19 x 26 cm]) (Learn More)

Superman is the D.C. Comics comic book superhero created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster who first appeared in Action comics #1 in 1938. The Superman franchise has spread to almost all forms of media including books, television shows and several films. Considering his popularity, it took a surprisingly long time for a live-action film to be made about Superman. In 1940, Republic Pictures approached DC Comics about doing a serial based on Superman but the negotiations broke down and, after they lost the rights due to legal issues, Republic ended up making a serial based on Captain Marvel in 1941. In 1948, Columbia Pictures finally made the first live-action Superman serial, called "Superman", and two years later, they made a sequel called "Atom Man vs. Superman". Although Superman was not the first superhero character, he popularized the superhero archetype and defined its conventions. Superheroes are often judged by how closely they resemble the standard established by Superman.
Important Added Info: Note that this is a "key issue" that features the classic patriotic cover of Superman by an American shield with a bald eagle perched on his arm, and it also has an ad on the last interior page for Sensation Comics #1, which contained "That New Sensational Character, Wonder Woman")!

Note that because this is an earlier issue, we have pictured many pages of the comic book in this auction, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of those images are displayed above. IMPORTANT: there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other ones, so be sure to click on that to see ALL the images from this comic.

Please note that we don't use a "comic guide" grading system, and OUR grading scale is completely different from standard comic book grading. Our "very good" is completely different from a comic book graded "very good". We provide many images of the comic book (covers, plus interior 2-page spreads), which surely allows you to get an excellent opinion of the exact condition of this comic book, so it takes out any worries that the comic has been "over-graded", because you can "grade" it yourself, by looking at the many images!

This is one of a remarkable collection of 268 mostly 1970s Marvel comics, including 136 issues of The Amazing Spider-Man, with most of the issues between #15 and #156, plus #2 and #12! These were consigned directly from the collector who gathered them in the 1970s, and none have had any restoration or have been "slabbed"! And EVERY one of these 268 comics start at $1 with truly no reserve. This is the kind of buying opportunity every comic book collector dreams of, and when these auctions close on October 26, every one of these comics will have a new owner!

Condition: good. Someone decades ago put a piece of tape on the front of a tear in the top left corner of the cover, and it has turned yellow and stained that area (see our image). There are two areas of tiny paper loss in the right of the front cover and one in the left of the bottom border. The entire comic was printed slightly off center, which resulted in slight extra paper at the bottom of all pages and the top of all pages being printed slightly too high. On all the interior pages, this solely affects the top blank border, but on the front and back cover, it slightly affects the printing. Please do not bid on this comic unless you can accept the above defects and have looked closely at our many images.
