An Original Vintage Unfolded French Stage Play Poster (measures 35 1/2" x 55" [90 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) Mephisto, the 1979 French stage play production (of the work by Klaus Mann) which was performed by Theatre du Soleil at the Atelier Theatral in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Note that this poster features art of a swastika rising over mountains. Mephisto - Novel of a Career is the sixth novel by Klaus Mann and was originally published in 1936 while Mann was in Amsterdam (he had fled to exile in 1933 to avoid political persecution by Hitler's regime). The novel is a thinly disguised portrait of the German actor Gustaf Grundgens, and it adapts the Mephistopheles/Dr Faustus theme by having the main character Hendrik Hofgen abandon his conscience and continue to act and ingratiate himself with the Nazi Party to keep and improve his job and social position. An award-winning 1981 movie was also based on Mann's novel. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good to very good.
