It represented over 100,000 film and television principal and background performers worldwide. The Guild was founded in an effort to eliminate what were described as exploitation of Hollywood actors who were being forced into oppressive multi-year contracts with the major movie studios. Since 1995, the guild annually awarded the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which are considered an indicator of success at the Academy Awards. In 2012, SAG merged with AFTRA to become SAG-AFTRA.
