Date Sold 12/24/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Linenbacked Special Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 41 3/4" [70 x 106 cm]) (Learn More) Be a U.S. Marine, the 1918 U.S. World War I (WWI) Marine Corps recruiting poster ("First in the Fight - Always Faithful") featuring James Montgomery Flagg art of a Marine holding a pistol against the backdrop of the U.S. flag. Note that there are at least two versions of this poster. There is one with a tagline above the title and one with solely the title. But there are also different sizes of this poster (not surprising because this would have been printed multiple times even in 1918, and probably printed again multiple times in the next few years) The Library of Congress calls the tagline version "1922?", but it calls the version without the tagline a "1918?" poster, so we can't date any example of this poster precisely, but they surely date from between the time the U.S. entered World War I to the first few years after World War I ended. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: James Montgomery Flagg Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned a smaller version of this poster (which measured 22" x 35"), but we have never before auctioned this larger version (which measures 27 3/4" x 41 3/4")! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster was never folded. It had creases and scuffs scattered in the flag area, and extending into the soldier, in his hat and nose. It had a 1 1/2" tear in the lower left border, with some small tears in the lower right border and a small tear in the bottom center. There is unevenness to the coloring in the soldier's upper body and face that may be a printing defect, because it doesn't seem that it could be a result of fading. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone mounted the poster onto a thin linen with no excess and no restoration of the above defects. After it was mounted, it became rippled and lightly stained in the bottom right corner, both in the poster and the linen backing. We suggest that the new owner of this poster have it removed from the old linen and re-backed, and they can decide exactly what restoration to have performed. Bear all of the above in mind before bidding on this rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
