An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Belgian Movie Poster (measures 10 3/4" x 16 1/4" [27 x 41 cm]) (Learn More) The Lone Wolf Spy Hunt, the 1939 Peter Godfrey detective mystery crime thriller melodrama starring Warren William (in the title role as the Lone Wolf), Ida Lupino, Rita Hayworth, Virginia Weidler, Ralph Morgan, Tom Dugan, and Brandon Tynan. Note that The Lone Wolf was a character in a series of eight novels that author Louis Joseph Vance wrote starting in 1914, and the first movie starring the character was in 1917, with Bert Lytell in the lead role. There were three movies after that with three different actors in the lead role. Then Lytell returned to the character, and there were many movies in a short period, and then Lytell starred in some sound movies as the character. In the 1940s, Warren William starred in a series of Lone Wolf movies, and then the character was played by Gerald Mohr. There were a few single entries mixed in where other actors played the lead role. In all, there were 24 Lone Wolf movies! The character was a master thief turned detective, and there were several other characters who were very similar, but few had the enduring popularity of The Lone Wolf! Important Added Info: This poster (which we have never auctioned before in all of our years of auctioning) is printed on the back of a part of another poster (the lower right portion of a pre-war Belgian poster for the 1938 movie "Trade Winds")! Why is this? During World War II, there were massive paper shortages in Belgium. Where Belgian movie posters had previously been approximately 23" x 32", there was such a shortage of paper that not only did they often have to print them on the back of other posters or maps, but during World War II, the size of the posters shrank dramatically, with some of them as small as 11" x 15". This situation continued even after World War II, until around 1946 or 1947, when they began making Belgian movie posters in a size of roughly 14" x 22", which became the standard size, and continued for decades! The posters like these that are from during World War II or immediately after, and which are printed in a small size (often on the back of other posters or maps) are INCREDIBLY rare (surely they did not print many, and surely many of them were soon recycled themselves)! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.
UPDATED 07/06/2018: Note that the Important Added Info section had an incorrect line of text. This poster is 10 3/4" x 16 1/4" and has not been trimmed (after it left the printer). Condition: good to very good. The poster poster's large upper blank border was clipped diagonal at one time at upper right (see our image). It has a few creases and small tears of varying lengths around the edges. It is otherwise in pretty good condition and after a simple linenbacking the poster will look great!
