An Original Vintage Linenbacked Stage Play Poster (measures 14" x 41 1/2" [36 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) Buckley's Minstrels ("and Burlesque Opera Group and Brass Band"; they are also known as "Buckley's Serenaders") were an American blackface minstrel group from 1840s to the 1860s. During the height of their popularity they performed regularly between tours at Buckley's Opera House, the Ethiopian Opera House and the American Opera House on Broadway. The only poster we have seen from this group is a 14" x 41 1/2" poster that bills them together with "25 first-class artistes". They are billed as "the largest and most complete minstrel company in the world" and the other 25 acts are billed as well. The whole production was "under the immediate personal supervision of G. Swaine Buckley, the Admirable Crichton of Ethiopian Minstrelsy and the most versatile artist living". If anyone knows more about this poster or this group, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned this poster unbacked in 2016. The person who purchased it from us had it linenbacked and has re-consigned it to us, so it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned! Also note that this poster is undated, but we know that this group performed from the 1840s to the 1860s, and therefore, it seems incredibly likely that this poster IS from the 1860s at the latest! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had many creases scattered throughout the poster, with tiny tears, smudges, and stains around the edges, with some paper loss in the bottom left corner. There was much tape scattered on the back of the poster. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. A pretty talented restorer removed the paper from the back and did a pretty nice job mounting it and doing minimal repair to the above many defects. I say they "did a pretty nice job" because while you can see many of the defects the poster had, it still can be displayed and enjoyed, and all the defects do is reinforce that this poster is over a century and a half old!
