An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Street Scene, the classic 1931 King Vidor New York City problems-of-the-poor romantic love triangle melodrama ("The Pulitzer Prize Drama by Elmer Rice"; a very complicated tale of a New York City tenement, where a middle-aged man shoots his wife's lover, and their beautiful daughter can escape the tenements by becoming the mistress of a well-to-do Jewish store owner, but after her mother is shot by her father, she decides to leave the tenements behind, to find a better life) starring Sylvia Sidney, William Collier Jr., Estelle Taylor, Beulah Bondi, Greta Granstedt, and Adele Watson. Note that this movie was based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play from 1928, but there was a social worker in the play who is very unsympathetic to the poor people she is supposed to help, and pressure was brought on the play's producer Samuel Goldwyn to change the character, and he proposed she become a secret Soviet agent who was planning to blow up the tenement building so that Clarence Darrow would be elected President, and apparently that scared people enough that the character remained similar to how she had been in the original play. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this half-sheet, and one of those has now been reconsigned to us, so this is still only one of two examples of this poster we have ever auctioned! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would have a strong chance of lessening its condition, so we will only send it in a very large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had paper loss at the middle crossfold, mostly in the blank white area, but slightly in the top edge of the green building. It had some creases and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds, with a 7" horizontal tear in the lower center of the poster, extending through the girl's sleeve and arm, and into the building on the other side. It had paper loss in two blank corners Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
