An Original 1949 Vintage Autographed Movie Souvenir Program Book (measures 9" x 12" [23 x 30 cm]; 20 pages) (Learn More) The Red Shoes, the classic 1948 (released in the U.S. in 1948 in a very limited release, and then in a wider release in 1949, and then in a very wide release in 1950!) Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger English dance ballet romantic melodrama ("... Dance she did, and dance she must between her two loves."; "There has never been a motion picture like 'The Red Shoes'"; "There have never been reviews as wonderful as these..."; "Winner of three Academy Awards"; "Written, Produced and Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen) starring Anton Walbrook, Marius Goring, Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann, Ludmilla Tcherina, and Leonide Massine ("The part of The Shoemaker created and danced by Leonide Massine"). Note that Shearer did not want to make this movie, because of how difficult it would be for her to perform the many dance scenes, and it took Powell and Pressburger more than a year to convince her to make it! Also note that this movie won Academy Awards for art direction and music scoring, and it is widely considered to be one of the movies that made the best use of three-strip Technicolor. Also note that this movie includes a scene of the dancers outdoors by tall buildings, and it was too costly to film that scene outdoors, so that scene was done with the judicious use of matte paintings! Important Added Info: Note that this souvenir program book has been personally autographed (signed) by director/producer/writer Michael Powell! It has WONDERFUL "provenance". David Ehrenstein purchased this book in 1965 at the Gotham Book Mart in New York City, a used book store. In 1987, he met Mr. Powell in Los Angeles where he had come to work with Francis Ford Coppola on the upcoming movie "New York Stories". Mr. Powell signed the program "For David Ehrenstein, From Michael Powell and on behalf of Emeric Pressburger", and then under it he signed his name and wrote "April 30 1987" next to it, so, of course, he actually signed it twice, because he signed his name within the inscription and after it! Mr. Ehrenstein created a "certificate of authenticity" for this when he sold it, but he did not refer back to the program itself, and either he made a typo, or just misremembered, and he wrote "1977" as the date Mr. Powell signed it, when actually, we know from looking at the inscription that it was actually 1987. In these days when people have doubts as to whether autographs were signed by secretaries, it is great to be able to purchase one like this, where it is 100% certain that Mr. Powell signed it himself! Also note that we have pictured the front cover and several interior 2-page spreads from this program, as well as the "certificate of authenticity". You can use these images to determine the exact condition of it from our super-sized image, but realize that there are some other pages you are not seeing. Condition: good to very good. The program is somewhat fragile and there are tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss around the edges of the covers and in the top corner of some of the interior pages. The inscription page has two tiny stains in the lower right that do not affect the inscription or autograph (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
