An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded German Movie Poster (measures 37 1/2" x 56" [95 x 142 cm]) (Learn More) 1914, Die Letzten Tage vor Dem Weltbrand (released in English-speaking countries as "Richard Oswald's 1914"), the 1931 Richard Oswald German World War I (WWI) melodrama (about the leadership of the Great Powers of Europe in the days leading up to the outbreak of the First World War, culminating in the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria; inspired by the book Die Kritischen 39 Tage: von Sarajewo bis zum Weltbrand by historian Eugen Fischer-Baling, who seems to have filmed an introduction that was added to the start of the film) starring Heinrich George, Albert Bassermann, Eugen Klopfer, Reinhold Schunzel (as Czar Nicholas II), Oskar Homolka, Lucie Hoflich, Alfred Abel, and Theodor Loos. Richard Oswald was an Austrian director, producer, and screenwriter. He made his film directorial debut in 1914 and set up his own production company in Germany in 1916. Being Jewish, Oswald was forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1935 and eventually ended up in the United States. He returned to Germany following the end of World War II (WWII) and died there in 1963. Also, note that comparisons have been made between this film and Thirteen Days, the 2000 movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this German movie, and we have never auctioned it before (and we have never auctioned any other poster from this movie)! Note that this poster has been mounted onto a "Chartex"-like material (we are not 100% certain it is Chartex, but if not, it is something very similar. Chartex is a backing paper that is a linen-like paper, similar to the material you line drawers with. It serves its function well in that the poster is preserved, which is why many restorers other than movie poster restorers use it, but it is very difficult to impossible to remove from the back of the poster. SO DO NOT BID ON THIS POSTER UNLESS YOU CAN ACCEPT THAT IT LIKELY CAN'T BE REMOVED FROM ITS BACKING, AND WILL NEED TO BE KEPT AS IT IS (although it is not harming the poster, and it enables it to be displayed). Condition: very good. The poster had tiny creases and tiny bits of surface paper loss on parts of the folds, with some smudges and scuffs scattered throughout. It was mounted onto "Chartex" (see above) with no restoration. It has excess Chartex around the edges. It almost surely can't be removed from the backing, but fortunately, it is in pretty nice condition and can certainly be displayed as it is. Learn More about condition grades
