An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the classic 1939 Alfred L. Werker detective mystery crime thriller sequel ("Based on the play 'Sherlock Holmes' by William Gillette with the permission of the executors of the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle") starring Basil Rathbone (in the title role as Sherlock Holmes), Nigel Bruce (as Dr. Watson), Ida Lupino, Alan Marshal, Terry Kilburn, George Regas, Henry Stephenson, and E.E. Clive. Note that this is the second Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movie, and it was released by 20th Century Fox, as was their first film, "The Hound of the Baskervilles". All subsequent Rathbone & Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies were released by Universal! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good. The card had pinholes, tears, and small stains around the edges. It had a diagonal stain in Rathbone's cheek and hair extending into the background to the right of his hat. It had some other stains scattered in the image. Overall, the card was in fair condition prior to restoration. Someone did their best to restore all of the above, and in addition to gel backing, they put conservation tape on the back of many parts of the borders and tears, but you can clearly see signs of the defects and the restoration. After the card was restored, it acquired a 1/2" tear in the lower right border. Please do not bid on this card unless you can accept all of the above or are willing to pay to have additional restoration performed. Learn More about condition grades
