An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) A Warm Reception, the 1916 Will Louis, Arthur Hotaling & Oliver Hardy silent romantic mistaken identity cross-dressing slapstick comedy short ("Comedy"; Hardy lives in a boarding house and has won the heart of the landlady's daughter; but the landlady kicks him out and arranges a meeting between her daughter and a visiting count, who she thinks more suitable for her daughter; Hardy gets two pals and in disguise they kidnap the mother, and then Hardy dresses as a woman and poses as the mother at the party, and keeps insulting the count to get him to leave, and finally, he literally kicks him out of the house, and he goes and "rescues" the kidnapped mother, and she is so impressed that she is happy for him to be with her daughter!) starring Kate Price, Oliver Hardy (billed as "Babe Hardy"), Joe Cohen, and Florence McLaughlin. In most movies where male actors appear in drag, it is very unbelievable and unconvincing, but actress Kate Price bore a significant physical resemblance to Oliver Hardy, and he was totally believable impersonating her! Also note that Oliver Hardy became a major comedy star as "Babe Hardy" in 1914, and he made dozens of comedy shorts each year for the next few years. But because this is a time from when next to no one-sheets survive, very, very few one-sheets from any of those movies still exist! Around 1919, his career started to wind down, and he made fewer movies and had fewer lead roles, and by the early 1920s, he was no longer a major star. But he had the great fortune to meet and team up with an up and coming comedy star, Stan Laurel, and of course, they went on to be one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, not only in 1920s silent movies, but also in very memorable 1930s sound movies as well! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, this is one of the few one-sheets that survive from Oliver Hardy's mid 1910s movies! In all our years of auctioning, we have only auctioned one other one-sheet from any of Hardy's 1910s movies! What IS linenbacking?
