An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Herald (measures 4 1/4" x 5 3/4" [11 x 15 cm]; 3 pages) (Learn More) New Moon, the 1930 Jack Conway romantic Russia military war musical ("A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ALL TALKING Picture"; "Based on the musical operetta 'New Moon'"; "Book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd, Frank Mandel and Laurence Schwab"; MGM bought the rights to the Hammerstein-Romberg operetta, but they threw out the plot, and substituted an even wilder one; of course, the main attraction is the great songs, including "Stout-Hearted Men") starring Lawrence Tibbett, Grace Moore, Adolphe Menjou, Roland Young, Gus Shy, and Emily Fitzroy. Note that this movie was remade in 1940 with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald in the lead roles. Note that Lawrence Tibbett was a singer during the 1930s (but best remembered from the Metropolitan Opera), who appeared in several movies as, naturally, an opera singer. He was the first to play the leading role in many famous operas, including the role of Brutus Jones, in The Emperor Jones (which he played in blackface)! Darryl F. Zanuck signed him to a multi-picture contract, sure he would be a major star, but alas, he was not, and he only appeared in a few movies. Later, he had throat problems, which led to a drinking problem (or perhaps vice versa), and his later years were unhappy. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
