An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 17" [36 x 43 cm]) (Learn More)

Shanghai Express, the 1932 Josef von Sternberg (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) China Asian railroad train romantic adventure thriller (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a group of passengers on a Chinese train bound for Shanghai; naturally, there are all sorts of different and memorable passengers, including Chinese revolutionaries, but none more memorable than the "Shanghai Lily", played of course by Dietrich) starring Marlene Dietrich, Clive Brook, Anna May Wong, Warner Oland, Eugene Pallette, Lawrence Grant, and Louise Closser Hale. Note that this was one of the seven movies that Dietrich made with director von Sternberg, and it is likely the best regarded, after "The Blue Angel" (which was the only one of the seven which was not a U.S. movie, because von Sternberg made it in Germany, in both languages).

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this first release window card! Not only that, but first release movie posters of any kind from this classic Dietrich/von Sternberg movie are beyond rare. The only poster we have ever auctioned prior to this was a half-sheet (with a photographic image of Dietrich and Brook), and we auctioned that poster three times, but the last time was 6 years ago, and other than that half-sheet, we have never auctioned a single poster, until we were consigned this window card, which has an artwork image of the two stars! Perhaps the extreme rarity of posters from this title is explained by the fact that the movie received a very quick re-release in 1937, during which time the first release posters were likely used or destroyed. Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 14" x 17" [36 x 43 cm]. Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had some creases, smudges, and scuffs scattered in the image, with a faint stain in Dietrich's forehead. It had most of its blank top trimmed off. It had some creases and tiny bits of paper loss near the original middle. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was paperbacked with only minimal restoration and the blank top was not recreated. You can see slight signs of the restoration, but this extremely rare poster displays well as it is, although one could have additional restoration performed if the new owner chooses.
