An Original Vintage Folded German Post-World War I Poster (measures 28" x 37 1/4" [71 x 95 cm]) (Learn More)

Furs Vaterland! (literally translates to "For the Fatherland!"), the circa 1919 German post-World War I (WWI) recruitment poster (featuring a tagline that translates to "Loeschebrand Freikorps of the Horse Guards Rifles Division. Enlistment Office for Volunteers, Berlin near Zoologischer Garten station.") encouraging men to volunteer, and featuring Otto Sager art of a soldier holding a bugle. After World War I in late 1918, Freikorps referred to various paramilitary organizations that sprang up across Germany following the country's defeat. Acting as an auxiliary police force, they were assigned to maintain order by the new post-war government. Unfortunately, many units proved to be little more than violent private armies, answerable to none but their commanders as they sought to crush communist-inspired civil unrest.
Artist: Otto Sager
Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning! Note also that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: good to very good. The poster has darkened along portions of the foldlines and edges (see our image). There is minor separation in a few fold edges and at the bottom of the vertical foldline but there is approximately 7" of clean separation in the left edge of the center horizontal fold (partially repaired with tape from the back, and the other areas of separation are also repaired with tape from the back that slightly bleeds through to the front). The poster is slightly fragile. It is otherwise in pretty nice condition and after linenbacking the very rare post-World War I poster will look great!
