An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded French Two-Panel "Double Grande" Movie Poster (2p; measures 58" x 87 1/2" [147 x 222 cm]; printed in 2 pieces) (Learn More) Le Chanteur Inconnu (released in English-speaking countries as "The Unknown Singer"), the 1931 Viktor Tourjansky French mystery romantic melodrama (about a Frenchman who discovers are great opera singer in Russia, and the man has amnesia, and he goes to France, where he is billed as "The Unknown Singer", but it turns out that he is a famous French singer from years ago, and he was in an accident, which gave him amnesia, and also changed his appearance, but his wife finds him and is still in love with him) starring Lucien Muratore (a real life opera singer, in the title role as Claude Ferval), Simone Cerdan, Jim Gerald, Simone Simon (20 years old, in her third movie, as a reporter!), and Jean Max NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Roland Coudon Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned one example of this poster (which is a "country of origin poster for this French movie) before (and we have never auctioned ANY other movie paper items for it whatsoever)! It is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster. Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Finally, note that this French two-panel was printed in 2 sections designed to overlap. Condition: fair to good. The poster was placed on to a very thin linen backing shortly after being printed, and then the linen was folded over the borders and sewn. The purpose was to reinforce the poster, so that it would survive, when it was passed from theater to theater, and when it was put up on walls and taken down. Such posters can be professionally removed from the original linen and placed on to a proper linen backing. I have done this to several such posters, and they end up looking wonderful!
