I have seen this on several different cards and posters over the years, and I have asked many people why it was done, and the most reasonable explanation I have ever heard is that it is done to make the image into a template for a huge mural, where each person re-creates one of the sections of the grid! I would doubt that the pencil marks could be easily removed, and likely any removal of them would leave a trace of the marks and the erasure in the image Learn More about condition grades
