STREETS OF SORROW ('25) STREETS OF SORROW ('25) French misc OR search current auctions Auction History Result k020 JOYLESS STREET MEASURE French 1980s re-print from Cinematheque Francais Date Sold 10/4/2005Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (probably 1980s) Linenbacked French Authorized Reprint Poster (measures 27" x 35 1/2") (Learn More) Die Freudlose Gasse (released in the U.S. in 1927 as "Streets of Sorrow" and also as "The Joyless Street"), the 1925 Georg Wilheim Pabst (G.W. Pabst) German silent post-World War I (WWI) Austria Depression era melodrama (about the effects of the Depression on an ordinary street in Vienna, and how one crooked butcher makes the lives everyone who lives on the street miserable) starring ("An All Star Cast Including") Asta Nielsen, Werner Krauss, Einar Hanson, Karl Etlinger, Jaro Furth, and a host of actors in minor roles as residents of the street, including a very young Greta Garbo, in her 7th film appearance. After she went to the United States the following year and became a major star, this movie was released in the U.S. in 1927, over two years after it was made. The U.S. distributor released it with a large image of Garbo and she was billed above the title as "Greta Garbo in 'Streets of Sorrow'" (which was incredibly deceptive advertising, because of her relatively minor role)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: d'apres Alain Cuney Important Added Info: Note that this French tribute poster measures 26 7/8" x 35 1/4" and is linenbacked. Note that this poster looks identical to the original 1925 poster! If you hold the poster to the light, you can see that printed across the back of the center of the poster is two lines of writing in French, which say that this poster is an exact reproduction of the original 1925 poster. We don't know when this was done, but our guess would be the 1940s or 1950s. If anyone knows for sure when this poster was printed, and for what purpose, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had very minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were extremely well restored, OR it had some minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster had some light creases throughout (some may have been caused after the poster was linenbacked, due to rough handling). Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
