Also included is an ad supplement that is printed on one side of a single sheet that measures 16 1/2" x 23". (Learn More) The Devil, the 1921 James Young silent religious Heaven-and-Hell romantic marriage relationship melodrama ("The sensation of two continents"; based on the play by Ferenc Molnar; a wild story of a man and woman in a museum viewing a painting called "The Martyr--Truth Crucified by Evil", and the woman comments that the painting's title is incorrect, that evil can never triumph over the truth, and a passerby starts talking to them, and he is the literal Devil in human form, and he sets out to prove the woman incorrect, by massively tampering with her life and that of the man with her, her fiance; but all the Devil's plans are thwarted, so finally, he brings her to his apartment to ruin her, but she prays for help, and a vision of a shining cross appears and the Devil is consumed by flames, after which the man and woman are reunited!) starring George Arliss (in his first movie!), Sylvia Breamer, Lucy Cotton, Florence Arliss (George's wife), and Edmund Lowe. Note that George Arliss had been a very distinguished English stage actor for many years before coming to Hollywood in 1921, and he made this, his first movie, when he was 53, and he became one of the most acclaimed actors of the 1920s and 1930s! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Michelson Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this pressbook! Note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. The cover is separated from the rest of the pressbook, but otherwise, it has survived in about as good condition as one could hope, especially since it is a century old, and the supplement, which unfolds to 16 1/2" x 23", has a great newspaper design with many articles and three images from the movie, and it is in excellent condition (see our images).
