Artist: Carlos Ruano-Llopis Important Added Info: Note that this auction is for the 1944 re-release one-sheet from this movie. We are also currently auctioning a 1941 style A first release one-sheet in a separate auction. Note that at first glance, this poster would appear to be a 1941 original, and in fact, we have mistakenly sold it as such in the past. However, it has a slightly different image from that of the 1941 poster, and the credits placement is different (the inset image of Power and Hayworth is full color, whereas it was black & white on the original). We were able to determine that this poster is from a 1944 re-release. How? The key to determining when it is from is the small "litho number" in the bottom left corner, in this case "9039". We have recorded litho numbers from many, many thousands of posters, which means we can compare this number to our database of numbers from other posters, and once we did so, it was easy to determine that the poster is not from 1941, but rather from 1944 (there are a lot of 20th Century Fox posters from 1944 with litho numbers very close to this, and the 20th Century Fox posters from 1941 have litho numbers around 5900). Why would they have done a re-release so soon after the original? Because in 1944, most of the major stars were serving in the military and studios were running out of new product to distribute. All the studios did lots of re-releases in 1944 and 1945, usually of their biggest hits, and they would NOT mark them as re-releases likely in the hopes of deceiving people into thinking they were newly made movies. What is especially interesting in this case is that, as we noted above, the poster designer made the inset image of the stars full-color, where it had been two-color three years before, plus improving on the original! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had separation and small paper loss along parts of several folds. There was small circular paper loss below the "N" of "AND" in the title at top center. There were many small pairs of staple holes around the edges and scattered through the image, with some smudges and small paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
