An Original Vintage 3 1/2" x 5 1/4" Photo (Learn More) The Gorilla, the 1939 Allan Dwan detective mystery horror screwball comedy ("Based on the play by Ralph Spence"; about a wealthy man who is being threatened by a criminal known as "The Gorilla", and he hires three detectives to investigate, and things get really complicated when a real escaped gorilla shows up on the premises) starring The Ritz Brothers (Jimmy Ritz, Harry Ritz, and Al Ritz), Anita Louise, Patsy Kelly, Lionel Atwill, Bela Lugosi, Joseph Calleia, Edward Norris, Wally Vernon, and Art Miles (in the title role as the gorilla; he played a few gorillas over the years, which was only slightly better than the rest of his career, which was almost all uncredited roles). Note that poor Bela Lugosi's star had fallen quite a bit since his rise to fame in 1931 in Dracula. The same year this movie was made, he had a great role as Ygor in "Son of Frankenstein", but in this movie (made for 20th Century-Fox), he was seventh billed! Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a wonderful collection of 29 photos (most measure 3.5x5.25, but some measure slightly smaller) that were taken by a man who worked at a large movie theater in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He created wonderful theater fronts and homemade posters (some that were displayed outside the theater and some inside the theater), and after he finished making his displays, he would take a picture of each and then he put them in a scrapbook. It is very rare to find photos of original theater fronts and local theater displays from this time period, and this is a rare opportunity to acquire 29 different ones (each in a separate auction). Condition: good to very good. There are some smudges around the edges, with stains and tiny paper loss in the bottom left blank corner. The photo was stapled and glued to an album page, and there are staple holes in the corners and glue stains on the back, but they do not affect the front (see our images).
