An Undated (probably 1940s) Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Stock Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) one of three John Wayne stock inserts used by theaters to advertise re-released (and in some countries, the first release) John Wayne cowboy western movies that he made for Lone Star Pictures in 1933 and 1934. The first of these inserts was made by Monogram when they re-released those Lone Star Pictures sometime between 1935 and 1939 (there are similar one-sheets for each of those titles, but they only made this generic insert for those re-releases), and it has a great headshot image of John Wayne at the top and artwork at the bottom. We believe the other two inserts date to the mid 1940s (both have solely "A Lone Star Western Re-release" on them), when he had even greater success with his World War II movies, and one of those inserts is similar to the 1930s insert, but with the elements rearranged, and the other has a waist-high image of Wayne pointing a gun. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a "stock" insert created by Lone Star for use by theaters showing re-releases of their 1930s John Wayne movies in the 1940s. This particular stock poster is undated, but it is surely from some point in 1939 or in the early 1940s (when Wayne became a major star with "Stagecoach" in 1939, many of his 1930s B-westerns were re-released to theaters). Theaters would order this poster, which has a large yellow blank area at the bottom. Some posters were overprinted with the names and credits of a specific movie, and sometimes, the poster were sent to the theater blank, and the theater would either write in the name of the specific John Wayne movie they were showing that week (or glue on a paper snipe), thus getting many posters for the price of one. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had the usual folds and was also folded 2" from the top. There were many creases and scuffs scattered in the image and there was paper loss down the right edge of the poster in the blank border, and tears and tiny paper loss in the other borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
