An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) A Baby Doll Bandit, the 1920 Fred Hibbard (billed as "Fred C. Fishback") silent chimpanzee ape cowboy western comedy ("It's a Universal-Jewel") starring Mrs. Joe Martin (billed as "The famous monkey comedian Mrs. Joe Martin"), Jimmie Adams, and Edith Roberts. Note that "Joe Martin" was a male orangutan (but he was often referred to as a chimp or monkey in advertising) who arrived in the United States in 1911 and passed through the hands of several owners and trainers, eventually being trained by Curly Stecker and his wife in 1915 for Universal. Joe appeared in at least 50 films from 1915 to the 1920s. Unfortunately, the Steckers (and the cast and crew) learned that male orangutan can be aggressive and prone to biting and violence! Joe injured several people over the years and Universal finally sold Joe to the Al G. Barnes Circus in 1923. Joe lived to a very old age for a captive orangutan, eventually passing away in 1931.
