Date Sold 5/3/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Unfolded Special Poster (measures 14" x 21" [36 x 53 cm]) (Learn More) Grand Graphophone Talking Machine Entertainment, the circa 1890s poster ("It talks laughs plays sings"; "The Graphophone Talking Machine is truly one of the most wonderful inventions and never fails to charm all who hear it") promoting an event that featured recorded music, singing, speeches, and more. The Graphophone was the name and trademark of an improved version of the phonograph. This machine was sold through Sears, Roebuck and Co. Sears would send these posters together with a machine to various locations around the country, and they would have an "exhibition" of the machine so that people would become aware of this machine and hopefully buy it! They would send examples of this poster to places who were going to have an exhibition and they would poster their specific information in areas at the bottom of the poster giving the price, location and time. We found that the Library of Congress has an example of this poster in their collection, but they note that it is in poor condition and mounted on a board. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster! Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It has some faint staining in portions of the blank borders at left and upper center (see our image). It is otherwise in nice condition, especially given its age! Learn More about condition grades
