A Group of 9 Original Vintage 1944 Photographic 35mm Slides (each measures 2" x 2" [5 x 5 cm]). Also included is the original printed brown bag. (Learn More) Walt Disney's Fantasia, the classic 1940 James Algar & Samuel Armstrong Walt Disney animated animation cartoon musical fantasy ("Walt Disney's Technicolor Feature Triumph") featuring Mickey Mouse and other cartoon characters created specifically for this feature movie, set to the music of classical composers including Leopold Stokowski, and Beethoven. Note that Fantasia had a very limited roadshow release which took place in several theaters with special audio equipment installed for the "Fantasound" system. This release started in late 1940 and continued into 1941, and these theaters often used home-made displays for the film. Throughout 1941, RKO negotiated with Disney to make a much shorter version of the movie in mono which could be shown in theaters without the need for special equipment. Disney finally agreed, and let RKO create a heavily edited version (he refused to edit it himself) which was released in early January of 1942. Regular posters were printed with a 1941 NSS number (it's not uncommon for films that are released near the start of a year to have a NSS from the previous year), and that is when the film had its first general release. So almost ALL of the known "first release" posters are from the 1942 continuous first release (with 1941 NSS numbers). The only pre-1942 advertising that we have seen are window cards, 8x10 stills and heralds from the theaters with the special "Fantasound" equipment. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that the other two similar sets to this are complete sets of ten, but this set from Fantasia is missing one of the slides. Also note that we have NEVER before auctioned these slides (or any others from this series)! They were created by "Craftsmen Guild" of Hollywood, "by special arrangement with Walt Disney Productions", and this company also sold a "Hollywood viewer" that you could view the slides in. Each set (there were at least five) came with a printed brown bag with a set number and an image of the character from that set, and captions for the slides in that set (and the bag refers to the slides as "35mm Full Color Transparencies" that were "reproduced from the original master films"). We are also currently auctioning two other sets from this series (from Bambi and Pinocchio) in two separate auctions. Also note that this auction also includes the printed brown bag these slides originally came in! What an amazing find this is! They come to us from a collector who acquired them many decades ago. We don't know that any of these slides survive, and if they do, whether they would still have the original envelope, and what condition they would be in. If you don't purchase these this time, you may wait the rest of your life to see these offered again! Condition: very good. The nine slides that are present are in their original display card and are in excellent condition. The brown bag has some tears and small paper loss around the edges (see our images).
