Date Sold 9/7/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Hardcover Program Book (measures 6 1/4" x 9 1/2" [16 x 24 cm]; 16 pages) (Learn More) Vitaphone was the sound film system used for feature films and short subjects made by Warner Bros. and First National from 1926 to 1931. It was the last major analog sound-on-disc system and the only one which was widely used and commercially successful. It was first used when Warner Bros. premiered Don Juan, the 1926 movie with John Barrymore in the lead role at the Grauman's Egyptian Theatre (later the Grauman's Chinese Theatre). It had "Vitaphone synchronization by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra"! Important Added Info: What is offered here is really remarkable. It is the hardcover program book that was created when Don Juan first played at the Grauman's Egyptian Theatre in 1926. The book contains 4 pages of information about Don Juan, including a great 4-page image of Barrymore in costume, but the rest of the book (which has "Sid Grauman presents Warner Bros' Vitaphone" on the cover) is solely about Vitaphone! It has information about the process, reviews from newspapers about how wonderful it is and 4 pages of "Vitaphone Artists" ("the greatest musicians and singers in the world" who have either already appeared in Vitaphone presentations or are about to make their premieres, including Al Jolson, George Jessel, Efrem Zimbalist Sr., and many others). The final page of the program is entitled "The Warner Brothers", and it has images of all four brothers, with information about their accomplishments and what they expect from Vitaphone. BUT THAT IS NOT ALL WE ARE AUCTIONING! In addition, the winner of this auction gets an invitation to the New York "Press Premiere" of Don Juan, which was held on August 5, 1926 at 8:30pm at the Warner Theatre on Broadway and 52nd Street. The invitation is printed on a stiff 4 1/2" x 7" card, and it comes with a blank envelope (obtained from Tiffany's!) and also a printed 7" x 9" announcement, which has a small image of Barrymore at the top and information about the program at the New York premiere, which included the "Vitaphone synchronization by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra", plus a "Vitaphone Prologue" by Will H. Hays and many others! We can't imagine that many of these invitations survive, if at all, and we would think the Grauman hardcover program books are equally as rare, and the winner of this auction will receive both of these ultra rare and historic items! Condition: very good to fine. The book has some minor wear around the edges of the covers and some around the edges of a few of the interior pages. The invitation, envelope, and program page have minor wear as well. However, we think these items have survived in about as good condition as one could hope (see our many images).
