An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) San Quentin, the 1937 Lloyd Bacon California maximum security prison romantic crime melodrama ("They fought for love of a dame... And the hate of each other!"; the old story of a new prison warden who falls for the older sister of a tough criminal who hates him) starring Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan, Barton MacLane, Joe Sawyer (billed as "Joseph Sawyer"), James Robbins, Gordon Oliver, and Ernie Adams. Note that, for unknown reasons, Ann Sheridan is referred to in the movie as Humphrey Bogart's older sister (he is called her "kid brother"), but actually, Bogart was 11 years older than Sheridan! Important Added Info: Note that first release posters from this classic movie are incredibly rare! We have only previously auctioned one example of the first release "other company" three-sheet (that was 27 years ago, when it sold for $2,875), and not a single other first release poster until we were consigned this 1937 first release half-sheet! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had two extra folds 1" to the left and right of the regular vertical fold, with many creases down that area, including in MacLane's face, with a tear running through his forehead and into the top border. It also had creases, stains, and some smudges scattered throughout, with creases and tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone many years ago linenbacked this rare poster and attempted restoration, but it is extremely noticeable. If I owned this rare poster, I would surely have it removed from the linen and have it properly re-backed, but please bear all of the above in mind before bidding on this rare poster.
