An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

The Big Party, the 1930 John G. Blystone pre-Code musical romantic love triangle comedy ("Good for nothing but love"; "A movietone melodydrama [sic]"; "Story and dialog by Harlan Thompson"; about a pretty girl who works first as a "singing sales clerk" and then in an expensive dress shop, and she meets rich men and ditches her simple boyfriend, but just in time, she realizes that she has made a terrible mistake) starring Sue Carol, Dixie Lee, Walter Catlett, Frank Albertson, Richard Keene, and 'Whispering' Jack Smith. Note that William Fox was the only major studio owner who thought there was still a future for silent movies as late as 1930, and he continued to make both silent and sound versions of all his movies, figuring that he would have a monopoly on the theaters that had not added sound equipment. What he did not realize is that EVERY theater would soon convert to sound, rendering his silent versions worthless, and helping push his company into bankruptcy. What is especially humorous is that this movie, which was a musical, was made in a "silent" version! Finally, note that sixth billed "Whispering" Jack Smith was a popular singer of the 1920s and 1930s, who was known as "The Whispering Baritone". According to the IMDb: "His distinctive 'whispering' vocal delivery, for which he became famous, was caused when he fell victim to a poison gas attack during World War I. His voice never fully recovered and, unable to sing at full volume, he instead learned to make the best use of early microphone technology to record his soft vocal style". Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.
