An Original Vintage Theatrical 7" x 9 1/2" [18 x 24 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Greed, the classic 1925 Erich von Stroheim silent quest-for-money-and-what-it-does-to-people melodrama (about the sudden fortune won from a lottery that fans such destructive greed that it ruins the lives of the three people involved; "From the famous novel 'McTeague' by Frank Norris"; "Screen adaptation and scenario by Erich von Stroheim and June Mathis") starring Gibson Gowland, Zasu Pitts, Jean Hersholt, Chester Conklin, and Sylvia Ashton. Note that the movie was filmed in 1923 but problems with editing the film to a manageable length delayed it's premier until December 1924 and the general release to January 1925! Also note that, sadly, much of the film is completely lost, but amazingly, dedicated fans reconstructed a 239 minute version of the movie in 1999, using still photographs to fill in the many missing sections! Important Added Info: Note that it appears pretty certain that this wonderful U.S. photo from 1925's "Greed" later made its way to Argentina, and in 1949, it was used in some kind of newspaper or magazine story about von Stroheim, and at that time, it acquired a date stamp and a small snipe from an Argentinean archive. But we believe it to surely be an original 1925 U.S. still. The wonderful snipe on the back describes how von Stroheim went to Hollywood in the mid 1910s (with an inset image of him from that time) and then gives information about the making of "Greed" (see our image). Also note that this still has been trimmed and it now measures 7" x 9 1/2" [18 x 24 cm].
UPDATED 03/16/2015: Note that a knowledgeable collector tells us that this still belonged to the archive of "Mundo Argentino", a magazine that was started in 1911 by the Editorial Haynes publishing company. Haynes was started in 1904 and was responsible for several magazines, a radio station and a newspaper, so the still almost certainly came to them as publicity material when "Greed" was first released in Argentina, and was later used for "Mundo Argentino" or another of their publications. Condition: good to very good. The still was trimmed to 7" x 9 1/2" (we don't know what size it was originally). Learn More about condition grades
