An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 45 1/2" x 61 1/4" [116 x 156 cm]) (Learn More) La Valse Renversante (literally translates to "The Stunning Waltz"), the 1912 Georges Monca French silent Folies Bergere dancing comedy short starring Mistinguett, and Maurice Chevalier (billed simply as "Chevalier"). Note that Maurice Chevalier is a legendary entertainer who is known today for his wonderful French and American movies of the 1930s and 1940s (and his reemergence in the 1950s and 1960s in American movies). But for decades before that, he was a legendary stage performer in France. In 1909, when he was 21, he became the partner of 18 year old Frehel, who was a popular French singer and actress. They performed together (both on and off the stage) for two years, and then Chevalier left her for Mistinguett, a 36 year old French superstar, and they too performed on and off the stage, and a devastated Frehel tried to commit suicide and had drug and alcohol problems the rest of her life. Chevalier and Mistinguett made this comedy short and two others, and of course, movie paper from any of them is beyond rare. Chevalier served in World War I, and after the war, Chevalier and Mistinguett went their separate ways, with Chevalier appearing in movies and on the stage, the beginning of the rest of his legendary career. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Adrien Barrere Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, this is an unbelievably rare pre-World War II French "country of origin" poster! Not only is it the only poster of any sort from this short we have ever auctioned, but we couldn't even find an image of it anywhere on the Internet. And we also never auctioned any posters of any kind from the other two movies Chevalier made with Mistinguett after this. Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! The words "museum quality" are sometimes applied to movie posters, and in this case, this poster absolutely SHOULD be in a museum, both for its rarity and for its historical significance! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Note that this poster ships in a very long tube (at least 33" long, but possibly 50" long or more). Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. You can tell how long of a tube this poster needs to ship in by looking at the shorter dimension of its length and width and then adding 4" to that (so a 47" x 63" poster will need to ship in a 51" long tube). Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had paper loss at the top crossfold, with tiny paper loss at the other crossfolds. It had tears and small paper loss in the top half of the middle vertical fold, with a lesser amount on the other folds. It had small tears and paper loss in the lower right blank border, with small tears and tiny paper loss in the upper left blank border, and a lesser amount of wear on the other borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking (I would think it has surely survived in as good condition as one could have hoped, given that it is 107 years old!). The poster was nicely backed, and displays well (and I certainly hope it is displayed in a public place like a museum, because it deserves to be!). Learn More about condition grades
