An Original Vintage Comic Book (measures approximately 7 1/8" x 10 1/4") (Learn More) Panic was a humor comic ("Humor in a varicose vein", which was a parody on Mad's slogan, "Humor in a jugular vein") that was published during the mid-1950s as a companion to EC's Mad (edited by Harvey Kurtzman). This comic was published by Bill Gaines (William Gaines) through his company, EC Comics (E.C. Comics), which he inherited from his father in 1947. Gaines felt that since so many other publishers were creating imitations of Mad magazine, he might as well do one himself! He had Al Feldstein (who was his co-writer and an artist on many of the EC comics) be the editor of Panic. After 23 issues of Mad, it became a magazine with issue #24, edited by Harvey Kurtzman, who had edited all the comic book issues. Sadly, Gaines and Kurtzman soon had a major falling out, and Kurtzman left Mad, and Gaines hired Feldstein to become the new editor of Mad. The issues of Panic are very similar to those of Mad magazine, but they often sell for far less, likely because they don't have the Mad title on them! Artist: Al Feldstein Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this comic book!
