An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Captain Blood, the classic 1935 Michael Curtiz (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Jamaica romantic swashbuckling high seas pirate ship ocean adventure thriller ("Caps the all!"; "By Rafael Sabatini"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Errol Flynn (in the title role as Irish doctor Peter Blood), Olivia De Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Ross Alexander, Guy Kibbee, Henry Stephenson, Robert Barrat, Hobart Cavanaugh, Lionel Atwill, George Hassell, and J. Carrol Naish. Note that Errol Flynn had had a few bit parts prior to this movie, but Robert Donat dropped out of this movie at the last minute, and Warner Bros. decided that Flynn was ready for stardom, and they sure were right! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Alex Raymond Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned two examples of the 1935 "photo style" first release half-sheet from this movie, but we have NEVER before auctioned this "art style" first release half-sheet, which has never been folded! When I (Bruce Hershenson) was a major comic book dealer in the 1960s and 1970s, it was "common knowledge" in that hobby that legendary comic strip artist Alex Raymond (who had created the Flash Gordon newspaper cartoon strip) had done the distinctive artwork used on this style of half-sheet, the window card, and title card for this movie (which was during the time Raymond was drawing Flash Gordon for newspapers). The artwork is unsigned, and I never saw any absolute proof of this at that time. In 2006, an auction company auctioned the original art by Alex Raymond, but while they said it was by him, they did not offer any proof. We have not seen or heard of anyone disputing that Alex Raymond drew this art, but it would be very nice to have any sort of corroboration! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this unfolded poster has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the poster onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the poster still looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the poster no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with posters that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the posters it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Note that this unfolded poster was gel backed, and while it could be rolled and sent in a tube, we would worry that doing so would damage the poster. Therefore, we would much prefer to send it in a large flat package. However, if the new buyer insists, we will send it in a tube, but only if they accept responsibility for doing so. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The poster had pinholes, tears, smudges, and small paper loss around the edges, with some pinholes scattered in the image and paper loss in the white background to the left of Flynn's credit. It had two small tears and small paper loss to the left of the "B" of "Blood" in the title. There were some faint water stains in the middle left of the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to restoration. Given the poster's defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration, and the poster displays pretty well (see our super-sized image to get a good sense of exactly how the poster looks now).
