An Original Vintage Theatrical Silk Banner Movie Poster (measures 37 3/4" x 52 1/2" [96 x 133 cm]) (Learn More) The Life of Emile Zola, the 1937 William Dieterle (this is one of five biographical movies Dieterle directed for Warner Bros; nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) biography melodrama (about the life of the famous French writer; from the book 'Zola and His Time' by Matthew Josephson; "Story by Heinz Herald and Geza Herczeg"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Paul Muni (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Emile Zola), Gale Sondergaard (as Lucie Dreyfus), Joseph Schildkraut (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Captain Alfred Dreyfus), Gloria Holden (as Alexandrine Zola), Donald Crisp, Erin O'Brien Moore, Henry O'Neill, Morris Carnovsky, Louis Calhern, Robert Barrat (as Major Walsin-Esterhazy), and Marcia Mae Jones. Note that as usual, Paul Muni wanted to appear like the actual Emile Zola, so he played the part with a beard, and for the parts of the movie where Zola is older, he had white hair and glasses. Naturally, Warner Bros. did not think that an image of him in makeup would be helpful to attract moviegoers, so on some of the advertising, they used an image of young, handsome Paul Muni out of makeup, even though he never appears like that in the movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that in the 1930s and 1940s, movie studios made silk burgees (also called silk banners) for most major releases. These were printed on a silk (or silk-like) material, sometimes with a gold fringe at the bottom, and usually with an opening at the top through which a wooden pole could be inserted, usually with a rope attached to both ends of the pole, so that the burgee could be hung from a nail at the theater. Few silk burgees are known to survive (we have only auctioned around a dozen of them in our many years of auctioning), and many collectors are not even aware of their existence! We have just been consigned a remarkable find of TWENTY THREE of these silk banners! That is double the amount we auctioned in all our previous 25 years of auctioning. Each of these 23 silk banners are currently at auction individually. This is a very rare opportunity to purchase one or many of this extremely rare size of original 1930s and 1940s movie posters! Condition: fair. There is unfortunate deterioration in the gold border at the top and bottom of the image, and some in the gold letters at top (apparently there was something about the gold that attracted damage!). It is possible that a restorer can repair the deterioration, but don't know how difficult or expensive that would be, so bear this considerable defect in mind before placing a bid on this banner.
